The 4th Sunday in Advent - Year C
In the Gospel, we follow Mary on a quick journey to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Both women are unexpectedly expecting: Elizabeth – older and without a child for so long; Mary – young, unmarried and hearing the news from an angel. Mary was concerned for Elizabeth, but it is Elizabeth who is filled with joy and prayer at the sight of Mary. Her words are part of the Hail Mary that we pray as Catholic Christians: ‘Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb.’ Mary recognises the presence of God and responds in prayer. This prayer is called the Magnificat. Even John the Baptist responds to Jesus by stirring in the womb of his mother, Elizabeth.
